There is a lot of controversy about whether or not believers should celebrate Christmas or not. I believe it is important to note the significance of the birth of Jesus Christ and to ponder over it. We celebrate the birth of Jesus because He came into the world to redeem the world. His birth is also very important because, without His entrance into this world, there would be no death ( Jesus died on the cross for us ) that will bring salvation to all. Psalm 111:9 says He provided redemption for His people; He ordained His covenant forever— holy and awesome is His name.
I want to share three significant reasons why the birth of Jesus is important and why we need to be thankful Jesus came into the world.
In Luke 2: 25 – 32
25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:
29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
According to Your word;
30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation
31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”
When the prophet Simeon met Mary and Joseph the parents of Jesus He prayed and said that his eyes had seen salvation ( Jesus ). The people of Israel had waited for the coming of Jesus and for the prophet Simeon, God told him, he would see Jesus before dying so he was full of Joy for the fulfilment of prophecy. Salvation (from Latin: salvation, from Salva, ‘safe, saved’) is the state of being saved or protected from harm or a dire situation. He had seen the face of Jesus the man who had entered the world to save all of us from harm and condemnation. In John 3:16 the bible says For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus came into the world to save us. We do not merit it but by believing in Him we are saved. O we celebrate the entrance of the messiah into the world.
We have been condemned by the world already. People are accused of things we know nothing about but by believing in Jesus we are saved. A lot of us have been carrying the guilt about a sin or a mistake we made years ago. I have good news for you, Jesus had to come into this world to carry that burden away and for you to have the power not to commit that sin or mistake again. John Chapter 8 tells a story of a woman who was caught in the act of adultery and the people condemned her to death by stoning. They wanted approval from Jesus but instead, Jesus did not condemn the woman. He instead gave her a charge to repent and sin no more.
John 8:11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
This is the God we serve. Jesus is the righteous judge. He gave the woman another chance and that is why Jesus had to come into the world. To give all of us another chance. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus had to come into this world for the forgiveness of sins ( sin means an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law). When John the Baptist met Jesus in John Chapter One he said in John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Jesus had to come to the world to take away our sins. Jesus had to come into the world so we can confess our sins and He will forgive us of our sins. 1 John 1:9 says that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Today we can ask God for the forgiveness of sins no matter the magnitude of sin, once you are truly repentant He is faithful to forgive you.
Finally, in Luke 2:32 the bible says that 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.” When the Prophet Simeon held the baby Jesus he said that Jesus is the Light to bring revelation to the Gentiles. The word gentile is derived from the Latin gentiles ‘of or belonging to the same people or nation’, from gēns ‘clan; tribe; people, family) is a term that usually means ‘someone who is not a Jew’. Jesus came to the world also for non-Jews which represents me and you if you are not a Jew. He came on the earth to bring divine revelation ( revelation means an act of revealing or communicating divine truth ) Non Jews were once in darkness but by the coming of Jesus Christ we now know the light. Even at the birth of Jesus Christ our acceptance of the Light ( Jesus ) was prophesied. Luke 2:32 The bible says that 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”
We thank God we the Gentiles are not left out from encountering the Great Light. Matthew 4:16 says The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned.”
God bless you and hope you remember the significance of Jesus Christ’s birth in a festive season like this. His birth was important because He had to come into the world for our salvation, to forgive us of our sins and to bring His divine revelation to us all whether we are Jews or not.
